HOW TO DESIGN YOUR OWN KITCHEN

If you ask me whether you should hire a designer for a kitchen renovation, my answer will always be a big “yes.” Kitchens have a million details to figure out—big and small—and decision fatigue can get real real quick. Every kitchen renovation comes with its own set of challenges, and having someone who can solve them is worth their weight in gold. That being said, I understand that not everyone can hire both a contractor and a designer. So if you’re in that situation, here’s a guide to help you design your own kitchen. Enjoy!

Create a Wish List

Every project starts with a plan, and a wish list is your first step. This should include “must-haves” and “nice-to-haves.” Consider how you currently use your space because it’s unlikely that you’ll completely change your habits overnight. Think about what will serve your current lifestyle best and anticipate future needs. Are you planning to get pets? How old are your children? Will family members be moving in with you? These are all things to consider when creating your list.

Establish Your Budget

Ah, the budget. It’s everyone’s least favorite topic, but it’s essential. Decide on a comfortable budget range, and then determine your absolute maximum. Once you have those numbers, set aside 15-20% as a contingency fund. This buffer will help cover unexpected costs or allow you to splurge on a finish or appliance without stressing over the budget. Even if nothing goes wrong (sounds great, right?), you can use this extra money to enhance your space.

Select Appliances

Selecting appliances comes before choosing cabinets. Start by doing your research. Technology and features have likely changed a lot since the last time you shopped for appliances, so make sure you know what you need before heading to the showroom. Avoid buying online—it’s better to visit a showroom and speak with a sales rep. This ensures you get personalized customer service, both during and after your purchase.

A common question I hear is, “Do all the appliances in the kitchen need to be the same brand?” The answer is no, but they should all have the same finish for a cohesive look.

Figure Out Your Layout

Next, determine your kitchen layout. Start by measuring your space, marking walls, windows, and other features on graph paper. Then, place your appliances. Remember that the refrigerator, stove, and sink should be in close proximity to each other—this is often referred to as the “kitchen triangle.”

Think about ways to conceal small appliances to keep the space clean and streamlined. For example, consider placing the microwave inside the island rather than on a perimeter wall. If your kitchen has a perimeter wall, consider placing the sink there and leaving the island as a large, open prep space. However, if your island is big enough, you can also place the sink there.

Choose Cabinets

With your layout sorted, it’s time to choose cabinets. Options range from Ikea to fully custom cabinetry. When selecting cabinetry, you’ll need to decide on many details, such as door profiles, kick and crown styles, handles, knobs, and internal inserts. Cabinets play a huge role in your kitchen’s design, so be sure to invest time here.

Select Other Design Elements

Now that the major components are decided, it’s time to focus on what I call “the supporting acts.” These design elements include:

  • Countertops: Consider durability, maintenance, and style.
  • Backsplash: A chance to add texture or color.
  • Flooring: Think about comfort, durability, and cohesion with the rest of the home.
  • Lighting: Layered lighting (task, ambient, and accent) will make your kitchen functional and stylish.
  • Window Coverings: Provide privacy and light control while adding a finishing touch.

Final Thoughts

Designing a kitchen is no small task, but it’s an incredibly rewarding experience. With careful planning and a bit of creativity, you can create a space that fits your lifestyle and looks beautiful. Good luck!
