The Truth About the Peloton Tread

As someone who works out everyday, I can confidently say that finding the right equipment is akin to discovering a hidden treasure. Over the years, I have tried a few different treadmills and the time eventually came when I decided to make the upgrade. Today, I’m sharing my in-depth review on what I really think of the Peloton tread, including what I think are it’s best features, and what I could do without.

Setting up a Home Gym

For years, I would wake up at 5:00 am and head to the gym before heading into the office, and while you get used to it, it also gets old. After the pandemic hit, and the see-saw of local gyms opening and closing, I decided it was time to put effort into set up a home gym. My workout routine typically consists of Pilates, hot yoga, cardo and strength training. The strength training and cardio are two things I can do at home so I purchased some heavier weights, but I still needed a quality piece of equipment for cardio – enter the Peloton tread. Now, I still get up just as early, but I can head downstairs instead of jumping into the vehicle.

What I Really Use it For

The two things I use the Peloton tread for are the stretching classes and walking / running. I have tried the strength training classes, and they are just nowhere near challenging enough for me, which just leads me to being bored. Beginner-wise, they could be great, but if you’ve been working out for a while, they leave a lot to be desired. All that being said, being able to walk/run inside when it is a god awful -20 below, is enough to make me look past some of the negatives.

The Entertainment Features

For walking and running, I typically do the guided tours more than the instructor-led classes. I personally like to either listen to music and zone out or watch YouTube, or Netflix. Speaking of, Peloton did add some new channel options like Disney+ and Netflix. However, for some reason, they do not work on my tread. I have a T.V. in my home gym, so this in particular isn’t really a concern for me.

Gamified Fun!

Last year, Peloton released the fun gamified feature in Canada known as Lane Break; And I have to say, I was pretty excited about it! Speaking, as a non-gamer, it is easy to see how one could become obsessed with it. It forces you to be hyper-focused on your workout, which is something I only have come across in Lagree-style Pilates. and you can control the level. The one negative with Lane Break, is there just isn’t enough class and music options. So I find myself going for the same ones over and over again.

The Music

Speaking of the music, there are a good amount of options. However, I’m the type to put on my head and blast Chris Stapleton or Jason Aldean. Yeah, I know, maybe not the most “appropriate” type of music for working out, but I like what I like. Cue, shrug-emoji.

The Instructors

Now, let’s talk about the instructors – if I do take an instructor-led class, I’m clicking on classes by either Kristen Ferguson, Marcel Dinkins or Selena Samuela. They each have a fun energy, and make great playlists, and help keep your entertained,

Ultimately, I’m happy with my purchase of the Peloton tread. I use it almost everyday, and there really is nothing better than being able to get your steps in for your own home on the days when you don’t want to venture outside for a workout. Now, can they just invent a Pilates machine? I’ll be their first customer.
