IN THIS POST:
As a born and raised Calgarian (we’re apparently a rarity) I am biased towards thinking that Calgary is a great place to raise a family. There are few other places I could truly imagine living. There is just something special about Calgary, and how it really does feel like it is a small town (however maybe not so small anymore) that just outside the city, you have beautiful mountains and prairies. Calgary really is a unique and special place to call home. Finding the right community to plant down roots is almost as important as finding the right home. Today, I thought it would be fun to share an interior designer’s point of view on the best Calgary communities for interior designers.
McKenzie Lake
Let’s dive right in with my favorite, McKenzie Lake, a gem in Southeast Calgary. McKenzie Lake is one of the best Calgary neighborhoods for families who crave a mix of outdoor adventure and suburban tranquility. The lake itself is gorgeous and grown in. It’s perfect to visit anytime in the year for a swim, skate, or walk. The community here is tight-knit, with plenty of events and activities that make it easy to meet other families. Schools in the area are top-notch, and the abundance of parks and green spaces ensures that your kids will have plenty of room to play and explore. Plus, the local amenities like shopping centers and recreational facilities mean you won’t have to venture far for your everyday needs.
Currie Barracks
If you’re looking for a neighborhood that combines historic charm with modern convenience, Currie Barracks should be at the top of your list. Located just a short drive from downtown, Currie Barracks is one of the best Calgary neighborhoods for families who want the best of both worlds. The community is built on the grounds of a former military base, giving it a unique character and a rich history. Here, you’ll find a blend of contemporary homes and charming heritage buildings. If you’re looking for a community with a great-vibe that is more “inner-city”, this would be the one I’d suggest. Currie Barracks is designed with families in mind, offering a range of housing options, excellent schools, and plenty of recreational facilities. The neighborhood also has an array of shops, cafes, and restaurants, making it a fun place to live.
Charleswood & Varsity
Choosing between Charleswood and Varsity was too tough, so I decided to include both. These neighboring communities in Northwest Calgary are both fantastic options and are often considered among the best Calgary neighborhoods for families. Charleswood offers a cozy, small-town feel with its tree-lined streets and friendly atmosphere. It’s perfect for families who value a tight-knit community and plenty of outdoor spaces. Varsity, on the other hand, is a bit more bustling and offers a diverse range of amenities. Both neighborhoods have a good-feel to them, which may not be helpful, but you’ll understand if you tour around these areas. The proximity to the University of Calgary and major shopping centers like Market Mall adds to the convenience.
Mahogany
Next up is Mahogany, another lakeside community that truly epitomizes the best Calgary neighborhoods for families. Located in Southeast Calgary, Mahogany is known for its stunning lake, which serves as the centerpiece of the community. Mahogany offers a variety of homes, from townhouses to lakeside estates, catering to families of all sizes and budgets. The community is designed with family living in mind, featuring ample parks, playgrounds, and a bustling community center. Schools in Mahogany are excellent, and the neighborhood’s family-friendly events and activities make it a wonderful place to raise children. If you want a community that feels like you’re out of the city when you’re home, this really is it.
Lake Bonavista
Another personal favorite, Lake Bonavista, one of Calgary’s original lake communities and still one of the best Calgary neighborhoods for families. Located in the city’s southeast, Lake Bonavista is known for its beautiful homes, stunning lake, and strong sense of community. Living here gives you access to private lake amenities, including boating, fishing, and swimming. The neighborhood is filled with parks and green spaces, offering plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities. Schools in Lake Bonavista are highly regarded, and the area has a range of amenities, including shopping centers, restaurants, and recreational facilities. For aesthetics, location, and amenities, you really can’t go wrong with Lake Bonavista.
Each of these communities is a testament to why Calgary is one of the best cities to live in, providing the perfect environment to raise a family and create lasting memories. So, if you’re considering a move to Calgary, you can’t go wrong with any of these best Calgary neighborhoods for families.
