Starting a home design project can be both thrilling and daunting. Although trends have shifted over the years, one home update that is still popular is adding an accent wall. When this trend first came online, we saw it being primarily used with one type of application. This was that one wall would be painted a different color than the other adjoining walls. Now that trends have evolved, we see many different applications. From brick to wallpaper, board and batten, paneling etc. There are no shortage of options on how to dress up an accent wall. In this post, I will share a few do’s and don’t if you’re thinking of taking on this project.

The Do’s:

Choose the Right Wall:

  • When selecting the perfect spot for your accent wall, consider the natural focal point of the room. A fireplace, a bed’s headboard, or even the wall opposite the entrance are ideal choices. By accentuating these areas, you create a visually compelling focal point that draws the eye and sets the tone for the entire space.

Play with Colors Strategically:

  • Experimenting with colors can be exciting, but it’s important to strike the right balance. Opt for a hue that complements the existing color scheme while adding a touch of contrast. Remember, accent walls are about making a statement without overpowering the room. Soft neutrals or muted tones can work wonders, creating a special backdrop moment for your decor.

Embrace Texture and Patterns:

  • Elevate your accent wall by introducing texture or subtle patterns. Textured wallpaper, reclaimed wood panels, or a faux finish can add depth and interest without being too overpowering. This approach allows you to add character into your space while maintaining a harmonious design.

Consider Feature Materials:

  • Don’t shy away from incorporating unique materials into your accent wall. Whether it’s exposed brick, wainscoting, or even shiplap, these feature materials can lend a touch of authenticity to your space. Choose materials that resonate with your personal style and seamlessly integrate with the overall aesthetic of the room.

Create a Gallery Wall:

  • Transform your accent wall into a gallery of memories by showcasing an eclectic mix of artwork, photographs, or framed mementos. This not only adds a personal touch to the space but also allows you to change the display over time, keeping the room dynamic and fresh.

Balance with Lighting:

  • Accent walls and lighting go hand in hand. Ensure your accent wall is well-lit to highlight its features and create a warm ambiance. Wall sconces, strategically placed spotlights, or even statement pendant lights can enhance the visual appeal, making your accent wall the star of the room.

Create a “wow” factor:

  • Taking wall tile from floor to ceiling is such a fun way to install tile. It instantly elevates the drama of space. Adding a textured tile, like Zellige also helps to add dimension to a room.

The Don’ts:

Avoid Overly Bold Colors:

  • While bold colors can be tempting, it’s important to exercise restraint. Avoid overly vibrant or clashing hues that may overpower the room. Remember, the goal is to create a focal point, not a visual cacophony. Soft, muted tones can make a statement without overwhelming the senses.

Steer Clear of Random Placement:

  • A common mistake is selecting an accent wall arbitrarily. Ensure your choice is deliberate and aligns properly with the focal point and layout of the room. Randomly chosen walls may disrupt the natural flow of the space, leading to a disjointed and unbalanced look.

Don’t Forget about Scale:

  • When introducing patterns or textures, consider the scale of your accent wall. Oversized patterns in a small room can make it feel cramped, while petite patterns in a large space may get lost. Strive for balance, keeping scale in mind.

Avoid Cluttered Displays:

  • While a gallery wall can be a fantastic addition, overcrowding your accent wall with too many elements can backfire. Maintain a cohesive look by arranging items thoughtfully, allowing each piece to shine individually. Embrace a less-is-more approach to keep the focus on your accent wall’s key features. Although there is a time and place for a more “eccentric” style gallery wall, I generally like gallery walls that aren’t busy, have a lot of negative space and are symmetrical.

Skip the Inconsistent Materials:

  • Mixing materials can be a design triumph, but it requires a careful hand. Avoid using inconsistent materials that clash with the overall aesthetic of the room. Strive for cohesion by selecting materials that complement each other, creating a unified and polished appearance.

Say No to Theme Overload:

  • It’s easy to get carried away with a theme, but incorporating too many thematic elements can lead to a chaotic design. Instead, focus on subtle nods to your chosen theme through carefully curated decor items and accessories. This ensures a cohesive and sophisticated look that stands the test of time.
